As Butyl group is structually short, hydrophobic intertactions provided by Inertsil C4 is weak. Therefore, Inertsil C4 is suitable for analyses of hydrophobic compounds such as fat-soluble vitamins.
The figure below shows the separation of fat soluble vitamins by Inertsil C4 and Inertsil C8. Inertsil C4 elutes analytes faster than Inertsil C8. Clearly the retentivity of Inertsil C4 is weaker than that of Inertsil C8.
